More honors for Clements’ Malone

— MONTGOMERY — Clements High School’s DaNeshia “Lou Lou” Malone was named the Class 3A girls player of the year Thursday by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Malone, a 6-foot-1-inch center, is among the most decorated players in Limestone County basketball history. She is the reigning county and area player of the year, and was a 3A first-team All-State selection.

Malone averaged 21.6 points, 12.4 rebounds, 6.2 blocks and 2.7 steals per game for the Colts during a 17-13 senior campaign.

She scored 3,446 points during her six-year varsity career, which included a state championship and an unprecedented five consecutive county tournament titles. Malone tops the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s career list for blocked shots with 771, and is second in career rebounds with 2,000.

In a pair of regular-season games against county archival Tanner, which advanced to the state Final Four, Malone amassed 66 points and 33 rebounds. She scored at least 30 points and blocked 10 shots or more in four games this season.

Madison Academy’s Josh Langford was among the association’s Boys Super 5. Others in the group included De’Runnya Wilson (Wenonah), Lewis Sullivan (Hazel Green), Jeremy Johnson (Carver-Montgomery) and Justin Coleman (Wenonah).

Alexis Jennings from Sparkman was named to the Girls Super 5 team, along with Jasmine Rhodes (Faith Academy), Shakayla Thomas (Sylacauga), Marqu’es Webb (Hoover) and Morgan William (Shades Valley).

De’Runnya Wilson and Marqu’es Webb received the state’s top high school basketball awards. The association named Wilson as Mr. Basketball and Webb as Miss Basketball.

Wilson, a Mississippi State football signee, is also the Class 5A Player of the Year. He led Wenonah to its third straight Class 5A state championship this season. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 18.4 points and 15.8 rebounds a game. Wilson scored 1,788 points and grabbed 1,671 rebounds in his career.

Webb, a Vanderbilt signee, averaged 15.1 points and 11 rebounds a game while leading the Bucs to their second straight Class 6A championship. The 6-foot-1 Webb scored 1,716 points and grabbed 1,591 rebounds in her career.
