It’s hard to call a team Cinderella two years removed from a state championship, but that’s just what Tanner’s girls basketball team are this season. After beginning the season 1-7, Tanner is headed back to Birmingham after defeating Cold Springs 46-39 Friday in the Northwest Regional Class 2A girls final.
In a game filled with runs, it was Tanner that made the final, decisive run that earned the Lady Rattlers their second 2A regional title in three years.
After falling behind early in the fourth quarter, Tanner outscored Cold Springs 23-9 in the final seven minutes thanks to some clutch shooting and gritty defense from the Lady Rattlers.
Sydney Houston led the way with eight points, six rebounds and three steals to earn 2A Girls Tournament MVP honors. Houston helped spark the fourth quarter run for Tanner with a pair of steals late in the game.
Leading 42-35, Alliyah Fletcher ripped the ball away from Cold Springs’ Caitlyn Hall with 42 seconds remaining in the game, then coolly converted a pair of free throws to ice the game for Tanner. Fletcher finished with six points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
