Ex-Auburn mascot has eye surgery to improve vision

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn University officials say a golden eagle once used as a mascot on football game days has better vision now after a recent surgery to remove a cataract from its right eye.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports ( that 33-year-old Tiger, also known as War Eagle VI, is recovering well after having the procedure performed at the Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine in December 2012.

Jamie Bellah, director of the Auburn University's Southeastern Raptor Center, says the approximately hour-long surgical procedure became necessary after the cataract in her right eye had become complete.

One of the first of Auburn's eagles to fly at its football stadium, Tiger has been on campus since 1986. Tiger made her final stadium flight in 2006 and has since been used in educational programs.
