Walking into halftime with a double-digit lead at the 2A state championship game last month, Tanner coach Chris Whitt was worried.
“I talked to the guys at halftime and reminded them we were in that same position in that other locker room two years ago — we were down 10 or 12 points at the half,” Whitt said. “I said, ‘They can flip a switch at anytime like we did two years ago and it can turn around.’”
Whitt’s halftime talk worked as Tanner put any hopes of a LaFayette comeback to bed early in the second half, and the Rattlers won their second state title in three years.
Whitt has been selected as the 2013 Limestone County Coach of the Year for leading the Tanner to another state championship this season. After being denied a state title during his first 17 years as Tanner’s head coach, Whitt has made it two out three since 2011.
