AG wants tape of Birmingham Planned Parenthood

Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Attorney General Troy King has asked for a copy of an audio tape of a Birmingham Planned Parenthood staffer allegedly saying rules are sometimes bent at the clinic.

The tape was made by a California-based group, “Live Action,” that is against abortion and has done similar operations at clinics in other states.

To make the tape, the organization said Lila Rose posed as a 14-year-old girl who was impregnated by her 31-year-old boyfriend and needed a secret abortion at the clinic last year.

Rose, who is a 20-year-old student, said the clinic staffer told her the manager “sometimes does bend the rules a bit” by not informing police of sexual abuse.

King said Wednesday he wants a copy to see if the clinic staffer broke any state law. He said the clinic is required to report allegations or knowledge of sexual abuse.

“If that tape is an accurate depiction of what’s happening, that’s very troubling,” he said.

Felicia Brown-Williams, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Alabama Inc., said it will conduct a review “to ensure that all our high standards of care have been met. Planned Parenthood of Alabama is committed to following all laws, and regularly makes reports to law enforcement agencies.”

“An essential part of our mission is to protect teens and to make sure that they get the counseling and medical care they need,” she said in a statement.

Rose said “Live Action” has been in touch with King and it’s the group’s practice to send full footage to appropriate local authorities.
