Alabama woman to testify on pay discrimination

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Alabama woman whose court fight over pay discrimination has become a hot topic in the presidential campaign is slated to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday.

Lilly Ledbetter, a former supervisor at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s plant in Gadsden, Ala., will testify as Democrats try to pass legislation that would give employees more time to file discrimination lawsuits.

Last year, the Supreme Court threw out Ledbetter’s discrimination complaint against Goodyear, saying she had waited too long to sue. Ledbetter argued that she didn’t know she was being discriminated against until it was too late.

Ledbetter appeared at the Democratic National Convention in August and has endorsed Democratic candidate Barack Obama, who has embraced her cause. Republican John McCain opposes the Democratic bill.
