April trial date set for former state Sen. Barron

A judge has scheduled the trial of former state Sen. Lowell Barron of Fyffe and former campaign aide Rhonda Jill Johnson for April 14.

DeKalb County Circuit Judge Randall Cole set the trial date for the two defendants in Fort Payne.

Attorney General Luther Strange's office got a DeKalb County grand jury to indict Barron and Johnson in April on campaign finance and ethics charges. The charges accuse them of diverting $58,000 from Barron's 2010 campaign account and a campaign car for Johnson's personal use and for non-campaign uses. The two have pleaded not guilty.

Barron is a Democrat who held prominent positions in the Senate, including president pro tem, before losing his re-election campaign in 2010.
