Ex youth minister sentenced on sex abuse charge

CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) — A Cullman County judge has sentenced a former Wetumpka church youth minister convicted of sexually abusing a child to 10 years in prison.

The Cullman Times reports (http://bit.ly/YxPSiB ) that 38-year-old John A. Astorga of Titus was sentenced Wednesday. A Cullman County jury in December found him guilty of first-degree sexual abuse. He was accused of having sexual contact with a victim who was younger than 12 at the time.

Astorga is a former minister at Bethel Assembly of God in Wetumpka. An Elmore County jury found him guilty in April 2012 of two counts of sexual abuse. A Madison County grand jury indicted him on three counts of first-degree sexual abuse in 2010.

The Cullman County judge gave Astorga the maximum sentence provided for in sentencing guidelines.
