Bat invasion of arts center has proven costly

— NORTHPORT, Ala. (AP) — Officials at an Alabama arts center say a bat infestation that caused it to evacuate its building in downtown Northport have led to higher-than-anticipated costs to make building repairs.

Since the bat problem surfaced at the Kentuck Art Center in March, Kentuck has sought about $50,000 from the city of Northport to help get rid of the bats and restore the structure.

The Tuscaloosa News reports (http://bit.ly/1dSfBpu) that the bats have been banished, but the arts association is still not back in its building. Kentuck officials aren't sure when they will be.

Emily Leigh, Kentuck's interim director, said officials were able to see roof issues when the bat eradication was done, and now estimates for work needed on the building have risen to between $175,000 and $200,000.
