Shipping traffic backs up on Miss. River

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Mississippi River shipping is stacking up because traffic has been reduced to one direction while crews search for a sunken tugboat.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Carlos Vega says 15 ships were waiting late Monday morning to travel upriver. One was waiting to go downriver.

Authorities don't know why the 48-foot tug called C-Pec sank Saturday — or who owns it. A good Samaritan rescued both people on board. Vega says the Coast Guard doesn't have their names.

The river was closed until Sunday night from the river's mouth to mile marker 10. The Coast Guard says it is unclear when two-way traffic will resume.

The cruise ship Carnival Conquest was diverted to Mobile, Ala. Its passengers are being bused to Alabama.

Carnival's Elation arrived in New Orleans on Monday and was to leave about 7 p.m.
