Alabama school district to auction 500 laptops

— PIEDMONT, Ala. (AP) — An eastern Alabama school district is set to auction off about 500 used laptop computers.

Piedmont City Schools Superintendent Matt Akin tells the Anniston Star ( that the laptops being auctioned Monday morning were refurbished at the end of the school year in preparation for the sale.

The district is replacing the laptops with MacBook Airs, which are lighter and faster than the older computers.

Akin says the computers will be auctioned at the Piedmont Elementary School cafeteria at 9 a.m. and bidders may arrive as early as 8:30.

The computers were issued to the district's graduating seniors who had used the laptops for the past three school years.
