Verizon gives 4 Alabama organizations grants

— MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Verizon Wireless has announced that its high-speed 4G LTE network has been substantially completed in Alabama just two years after being launched in Montgomery and Mobile.

To celebrate Verizon officials announced Tuesday they were awarding four grants worth a total of $100,000 to four Alabama organizations.

Verizon's president for the Georgia/Alabama region, Jonathan LeCompte, was joined by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and first lady Dianne Bentley at a Capitol news conference Tuesday to announce the grants. The grants included:

— $10,000 to the Governor's Emergency Relief Fund, part of Verizon's commitment to tornado relief.

— $10,000 to Ready Alabama's Be Ready Camp to help Alabama youth learn to be first responders.

— $30,000 to the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

— $50.000 for grant proposals for domestic violence prevention programs.
