Moulton man accused of robbing bank waits for police

MOULTON, Ala. (AP) — Police in Moulton didn't have to go far to find a man suspected of robbing a bank.

Police Chief Lyndon McWhorter said a man robbed Bank Independent on Monday. Then he put a bank bag with more than $4,000 in his vehicle and sat down on a bench outside the bank to wait for police to arrive.

Police arrested 49-year-old Rickie Lawrence Gardner on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree theft. Gardner told police he feared losing his job at a paper company after suffering a leg injury and he needed a place to stay.

Gardner is being held in the Lawrence County Jail. Court records do not indicate if he has an attorney yet.
