State closes part of I-20 for months of repairs

— BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Traffic headaches are getting worse in metro Birmingham.

The Alabama Department of Transportation is closing a nearly 10-mile section of Interstate 20 for months of repairs east of Birmingham.

First, all eastbound lanes will be closed between the I-20/59 split and Interstate 459. After that work is done, all westbound lanes will be closed.

The work is expected to last into November. The eastbound shutdown began early Tuesday and should last around three months.

Highway officials say they have to close the interstate because of extensive re-surfacing work. They're encouraging drivers to use Interstate 59 and I-459 to detour around the area until the work is done.

Local officials are warning drivers to expect major delays during the nearly $39 million project.

About 70,000 vehicles travel the highway daily.
