Police chief still recovering from gunshot wound

Associated Press

ASHLAND, Ala. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a shooting that wounded Ashland's police chief, but they're saying little about the circumstances.

Officials tell WBRC-TV (http://bit.ly/11FEMFM) that Police Chief Benny Davis was off duty Saturday when he was shot in the chest.

Ashland Mayor Larry Fetner said Monday that Davis remained in the hospital but was making improvements. Fetner added that Davis had opened one eye and his blood pressure was more stable.

The mayor also says the bullet is still lodged in the chief's back. Doctors are not removing it at this time, until they are sure the chief remains in stable condition.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is not releasing many details, including who they believe the shooter may be or where the shooting took place.
