Huntsville man pleads guilty to federal counterfeiting charges

LAFAYETTE, La. —

A Huntsville man found with counterfeit DVDs and CDs when stopped three times by law enforcement officers on Interstate 10 pleaded guilty this week to federal charges of copyright infringement.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Lafayette, La., says 53-year-old Johnson Augustus Powell, of Huntsville, was first stopped in August 2011, when state police seized 1,463 movie DVDs and 1,225 music CDs from his vehicle.

The (Baton Rouge) Advocate reports a second stop by a Calcasieu Parish Anti-Drug Team officer in November 2011 yielded another 1,085 DVDs and 836 CDs, and a third stop by a Calcasieu Parish Anti-Drug Team officer in April 2012 resulted in the seizure of 511 DVDs and 423 CDs.

Powell faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when sentenced.
