State fire officials looking at drug rehab centers

ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) — Alabama fire officials say they're checking to make sure drug rehabilitation centers statewide are in compliance with safety codes.

State Fire Marshal Edward Paulk tells The Anniston Star (http://bit.ly/XWhTky ) his deputies are looking at any facilities that come to their attention.

State fire marshal's office spokesman Steve Homes says a rehab center in Sylacauga was recently cited for code violations. Three facilities in Oxford were cited for violations last month.

They've been ordered to meet with an architect by April 11 and work toward code compliance. They must install sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, emergency lights, emergency exits and to conduct regular fire drills.

Paulk says he's concerned that when people open a facility hastily they don't consider the placement of exits or that more alarm systems are needed.
