US Senate confirms Haikala as new federal judge for area

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate has confirmed U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Haikala to serve as a U.S. District Court judge for the Northern District of Alabama.

Haikala was confirmed in a 90-0 roll call vote Monday to serve in the court, which covers more than 30 counties in Alabama — including the Huntsville, Tuscaloosa and Gadsden areas.

President Barack Obama nominated Haikala to serve as one of seven federal judges in the district in May. Haikala had been working as a magistrate judge since last October. Before that, Haikala worked for Lightfoot, Franklin & White, a Birmingham law firm.

Haikala earned a degree in psychology from Williams College in 1986 and received her juris doctorate degree from Tulane Law School in 1989.

Haikala is replacing Judge Inge Johnson.
