Police officer wounded by accidental gun discharge

— BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer in Birmingham has been taken to a hospital after a gun accidentally discharged, wounding him in the leg.

Birmingham police tell al.com the officer was shot around 7 a.m. Wednesday, near the intersection of 18th Street North and 31st Avenue North. WBRC-TV reports that the officer was taken to UAB Hospital.

Birmingham police Sgt. Johnny Williams said the injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

Police say employees at a trucking company had been chasing suspects who they believed was breaking into the company. He said officers stopped the people involved in the chase and discovered that two of them had weapons. He said a handgun fell to the ground and discharged while the officer was trying to clear it.
