An Athens man was among 11 people killed in eight traffic wrecks over the Thanksgiving weekend, Alabama state troopers reported. The 102-hour holiday travel period began at 6 p.m. last Wednesday and ended at midnight last Sunday.
Daniel Hose, 22, of Athens, and Jonathen Jolley, 23, of Harvest died in a crash about 3 a.m. Thanksgiving day.
Authorities said the crash happened on Jeff Road between Burwell Road and Kelly Springs Road around 3 a.m. Nov. 28. They said the car was going more than 100 mph when it crashed into a tree.
The eight crashes occurred in Russell, Madison, Crenshaw, Walker, Autauga, Barbour, Pickens and Talladega counties. According to preliminary investigation, alcohol was a factor in at least three of the deadly incidents, and seven of the 11 individuals killed were not using seat belts at the time of the crashes.
During this same holiday travel period in 2012, which was from 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, to midnight Sunday, Nov. 26, troopers investigated five traffic deaths.
