Former Ala narcotics officer sentenced to prison

— A judge has handed down a prison sentence to the former head of the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force.

U.S. District Judge Inge P. Johnson imposed a sentence of one year and a day in prison on Thursday for 55-year-old Jeffrey Lynn Snyder of Carrollton.

Snyder pleaded guilty in June to stealing at least $125,000 in suspected drug money that was seized by the task force over a two-year period ending in June 2012.

Federal prosecutors say that besides the prison term, Snyder must pay $125,000 in restitution to the task force, which includes officers and deputies from Tuscaloosa, Northport and the University of Alabama.

Snyder worked for the Tuscaloosa Police Department for 29 years before retiring a year ago. He became task force commander in 2002.
