1st black woman sworn in as Tuscaloosa postmaster

— TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (AP) — Sherrill Palmer, a 16-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service, has been sworn in as the first black woman to serve as postmaster of Tuscaloosa.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1bENNnf ) Palmer took her oath of office Friday afternoon on the porch of the Jemison mansion.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox opened the ceremony with a prayer, expressing gratitude for public servants "who give to something greater than themselves."

Palmer, a mother of two, told the crowd that it was "an honor to stand here today for this wonderful and historical occasion" and encouraged others to dream big to "accomplish the impossible."
