Hanceville officer kills police dog that attacked him

CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) — A police officer in north Alabama shot and killed a police dog that he said attacked him during a training session.

Authorities said Officer Anthony Childress was training Monday with a Belgian Malinois at a park when the dog attacked. Officials said it bit the officer's leg, then attacked a second time, biting into the officer's head and causing lacerations that required surgery.

Childress shot the dog because it appeared it would attack again.

Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long said Childress loved the dog and was very upset.

Mayor Kenneth Nail told The Cullman Times (http://bit.ly/14sh5Tv ) that the dog had been with the department about a year and was used in drug investigations.
