Abandoned motel in Birmingham goes up in flames

— BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Birmingham fire officials say a large blaze at the abandoned Adams Inn motel has been brought under control.

Fire officials tell WBRC-TV that firefighters were called to the fire near 9th Street North and 3rd Avenue North around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Birmingham Fire Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis says crews found no one inside the building at the time. No injuries were reported.

Mardis said about 40 to 50 firefighters were called in to battle the two-alarm blaze.

Mardis tells that several fires have been reported in the past few years at the building, most of them smaller fires started by vagrants. The building caught fire in 2009 and 2010.
