4 bodies discovered in car off Winston County road

Double Springs — Four bodies were discovered in a car on a county road in northern Alabama, and investigators early this morning were searching for clues about who killed the people.

Gunshot wounds were found, though the cause of their deaths was not yet known, Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris told The Associated Press this morning.

The white car has out-of-state tags, and contained the bodies of four adults who were a combination of men and women from outside the county, Harris said.

"No one in our area was endangered or is missing at this point," he said. "To our knowledge, there's no one locally in our county involved."

He declined say which state the car was registered in or discuss other details about the people inside until their next-of-kin are notified.

A passer-by noticed the vehicle off County Road 327 on her way to work Wednesday morning and called authorities when she saw it in the same place on her way home. The area is about 60 miles northwest of Birmingham.

Dozens of law officers were at the scene just south of the Double Springs area early this morning.

No one was in custody, Harris said just before dawn today. Asked about possible suspects early Thursday, the sheriff said there were "none we could discuss at this point."

"We spent all night processing the scene and we took the vehicle to an indoor location to process the vehicle," Harris said.

Investigators were waiting on results of forensics testing. He said the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is assisting his agency with the case, as well as the coroner and district attorney's office.
