Bill for marijuana derivative expands into study

MONTGOMERY —

A bill to allow the treatment of epileptic seizures with a marijuana derivative has turned into a $1 million medical study that will supply the product to Alabama families.

Legislators pushing a bill known as "Carly's Law" announced the change today and predicted it will win legislative approval in the next few weeks.

The Senate was planning to consider the legislation this afternoon. The revised bill allows the Department of Neurology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to do a $1 million study of cannabidiol, or CBD. People prescribed the oil by UAB would have legal protection.

Pelham police officer Dustin Chandler led families pushing for the legislation to help their children with severe epilepsy. Chandler says the revised bill provides a good, safe way to help.
