Free camp open to children affected by tornadoes

The News Courier

— A free camp event will be held next month for children who were affected by the April 27 tornadoes.

Camp Alabama Storm is being sponsored by the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Alabama, and will be held at Camp McDowell in Nauvoo.

The camp is for children ages 8-12.

The event will be held in two sessions, the first of which is scheduled for Nov. 11-13. A second session is slated for March 30-April 1.

“The camp will provide a fun, relaxing, and safe place to share common experiences with group activities designed and administered by experts in children’s grief and trauma issues,” according to a camp press release.

“Campers will have the opportunity to tell their story, celebrate the present and look toward the future.”

Camp events will include a drum circle, arts and crafts, hayride, bonfire, storytelling, outdoor cookout, canoeing, live music and outdoor games.

The activities will focus on inner resources for coping, and special attention will be given to the upcoming holiday season in terms of planned activities.
