Athens gets grant for Farmers Market upgrade

ATHENS — Athens will soon receive a $20,000 grant to improve the Farmers Market, including adding a community garden.

Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Executive Coordinator Lynne Hart announced the receipt of a Lowe’s Keep America Beautiful grant at Saturday’s Earth Day celebration.

“We are the only organization in the state of Alabama to be awarded a Lowe’s/KAB grant,” Hart said.

KALB partnered with the city of Athens and Spirit of Athens to apply for the grant. Limestone County Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee wrote a letter of support. The county owns the Farmers Market, located on Green Street, and recently painted the pavilion to help start beautification efforts.

“Our grant proposal was chosen from more than 350 applications,” Hart said.  “We couldn't be more excited about being awarded this grant and in playing a part in making this project a reality.”
