LawLers in running for state's best barbecue

By Rebecca Croomes

— When it comes to barbecue, no two recipes are the same, and in North Alabama, everyone knows that.

Jim Kelley and the crew at LawLers Barbecue have experienced a whirlwind of attention since the Alabama Department of Tourism asked their fans to nominate the best barbecue statewide. The competition is a food-based version of March Madness, and it’s getting down to the Final Four.

LawLers is in the running for Best Barbecue in North Alabama against hickory-flavored giant Big Bob Gibson’s of Decatur. The winner of the “Quest for the Best” will then go against the best of South Alabama, and finally the winner of the east vs. west bout. “They’re a powerhouse,” Kelley said of Big Bob Gibson’s. “That’s some tough competition, but we’re holding our own.”

Announced at the beginning of the month, the “Quest for the Best” sought candidates from north, central, south and coastal Alabama. Alabama Department of Tourism asked fans to submit their favorites.
