Steelcase celebrates 100 years in business

— Steelcase celebrated its 100th anniversary recently with a presentation and lunch at Calhoun Community College’s Aerospace Training Center. CEO Jim Hackett said the Athens plant is the largest furniture factory in the world.

The company began as a metal office furniture company in Grand Rapids, Mich., and first made fireproof wastebaskets. It has plants worldwide, including the factory in Athens, and its products range from office chairs to filing cabinets and other office furniture. The Athens factory has been a major supporter of United Way of Limestone County and other community organizations.

During the anniversary celebration, local United Way director Kaye McFarlan presented a certificate of appreciation to Hackett. United Way also donated 100 books to Athens Elementary in honor of Steelcase’s 100 years.
