Dog gone found

— A Limestone County dog stolen from its home in western Limestone County last week was returned to its digs unharmed Thursday only hours after the media announced a reward had been offered for its return and for the arrest of the person who stole it.

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said Thursday evening the dog had been found near U.S. 72 East. He said employees of Preston’s Western Wear found the dog.

“When they opened the door, the dog was waiting and went in,” Blakely said. “They contacted an animal rescue.”

The rescue noticed media reports about the stolen dog and contacted the Sheriff’s Office, the sheriff said.

On Thursday morning, Chief Investigator Capt. Stanley McNatt had sent out a press release announcing a reward for information leading to the recovery of the dog and the arrest of the person who stole it. He said the black Labrador mix with a pink collar was stolen about 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, from the intersection of Alabama 99 and Corder Road.

“A white male got out of a newer model, four-door, white car and picked the dog up,” McNatt said. “The vehicle was last seen traveling toward Athens from Corder Road. The owner of the dog attempted to stop the people that took the dog, but was unsuccessful.”

At press time the dog had not been questioned regarding its abductors.
