Beautification takes time on Forrest Street

— Motorists accustomed to using Athens’ Forrest Street underpass during the day will have to wait a little longer to use it while city workers complete a nearby landscaping upgrade.

For the past few weeks, the underpass west of Athens Middle School has been closed during the day but it should be open again in a week or so, said Athens Street Department Director Dolph Bradford, who designed the landscaping plan.

“We are going to keep the existing crepe myrtles and add a little sod and grass, and we will paint the bridge to make it look better,” Bradford said Wednesday. He described the existing paint on the narrow underpass as old, faded and “about half off.”
