Joe Wheeler offering a spring break getaway close to home

— The Tennessee and Elk rivers might offer some Limestone Countians a spring break close to home.

Officials with Joe Wheeler State Park, situated on 2,550 acres in Rogersville, said the park is ready for Alabama’s spring break guests.

“If you enjoy a peaceful, relaxing place where you can wake and see the water every day, a place where you can rent a boat, go hiking, go golfing or just sit on the balcony, sip a cup of coffee and watch the river go by, Joe Wheeler State Park is the place,” Assistant Superintendent Chad Davis told the News Courier in a previous interview.

The state park offers a campground, cabins and lakeside cottages as well as Daniella’s in the Park restaurant, hiking trails, boat rentals (pontoons, paddle boats, kayaks and paddle boards), 18-hole golf course and a picnic area.

Starting Saturday, the park will offer daily spring break events.

Joe Wheeler’s Spring Break Spectacular kicks off with the Running Buck Wild Extreme 5K and Fun Run Saturday.

On Sunday, the park will offer smores on the patio with fire pits and smore ingredients provided.

There will be a Talk of the Town Fashion Show starting at 7 p.m. Monday. Local stores will set up merchandising booths for shopping. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Water lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy Water Sport Wednesday when the park discounts paddle and pontoon boat and kayak rentals.

The park will offer karaoke starting at 5 p.m. Thursday and discounted rounds of golf on Friday.

Spring break will wrap up with Sight Seeing Saturday. Pontoon Boat Tours will be available at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The park is hoping to offer a little something for everyone, but officials usually agree the biggest attraction is the river.

Located two miles west of Rogersville off U.S. 72, Joe Wheeler State Park is 22 miles west of Athens.
