Students help celebrate veterans during school events

— Schools across the county got involved in observing Veterans Day.

Students in the combined third-grade classes at Athens Elementary School sang and waved flags during their special salute to Veterans Day Friday.

The students performed for classmates and family members. Their program included an armed forces medley, “This is America,” “I Love My Country” and “Free Like Me.”

J'Kevia Sheffler thought her part of the Cowart Veterans Leadership Day program was to show where her mother is stationed overseas on a globe.

However, J’Kevia and her mother, Sgt. Pricilla Sheffler, were able to talk and see each other via Skype Friday thanks to teachers and staff at Cowart Elementary School.

J’Kevia was surprised when her mother appeared on a screen behind her. She later got to talk one-on-one with her while standing behind one of the school’s computers.
