The Athena League — a group of female philanthropists — have been fundraising for the people of Limestone County for more than 40 years. Since 1972, the group has been raising money for local organizations that provide services to women and children in the area. The organization also provides a scholarship for one local high school senior each year.
For many years, the Athena League sold apples in the community and in schools throughout the county. Twelve years ago, the group started its annual Apple Annie Golf Tournament and Silent Auction. This year, the 12th-annual Bojangles’ Apple Annie Charity Golf Tournament will be held Friday, Oct. 11, at Canebrake Club in Athens.
Registration for the tournament begins at noon.
The entry fee is $500 per team or $125 per player. The fee includes lunch, beverages, golfer prizes and a ticket per player to the Apple Harvest dinner.
There is a 1 p.m. shotgun start for the four-person scramble split into two flights, which includes $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place.
The Apple Annie Harvest dinner will take place immediately after the tournament. Tickets are $20 per person. The fundraiser also includes an online auction organized by DeAnna McNeill, Athena League president.
“Fall is a special time of year, especially when we, Athena League, can give back to the community through the Apple Annie Golf Tournament,” Golf Tournament Chairwoman Amanda Ford said.
Through this event, she said, the following charities will benefit from the combined donations from our tournament sponsor, co-sponsors, supporters, family and friends: the Athens-Limestone Children’s Advocacy Center, the Athens Limestone Public Library Foundation and the Athena League Scholarship Fund.
“We are so honored that the Athena League has chosen to donate funds for the library this year,” said Susan Ming, vice president of the Athens-Limestone County Public Library Foundation. “Their gift will go a long way toward this project that will benefit the children and adults of Limestone County.”
Organizers said local businesses and business leaders are the biggest contributors. Bojangles’ of Athens serves as the tournament sponsor. Co-sponsors are CDPA, PC; First National Bank; 306 Barbecue; McClary Ford; Alexander, Corder and Shelley; Mallette Dermatology; and Canebrake Club.
"Apple Annie’s Annual Golf Tournament is a great way for the community, businesses, and volunteers to pool their resources and time in order to raise donations to support women’s and children’s charities in Limestone County,” said Leigh Ann Cochran, another golf tournament chairwoman. “It is uplifting to see so many people partner with each other in order to support and meet the needs of our community."
