Plans for new Athens City Hall unveiled

By Jean Cole

ATHENS — This is an artist's rendering of the new Athens City Hall, which will be built at the corner of Marion and Hobbs streets over the next two years. The city borrowed $2.2 million for the project in 2009 and has already spent about $100,000 to demolish the old City Hall and to prepare the site for the new building on the same spot. The plan reflects Greek Revival architecture in the area, including the Methodist Church on the same block and the Limestone County Courthouse. Initially, officials had hoped to retain the old City Council chambers, but they later found the plan unworkable, so the entire building was demolished. For more details and drawings of the plan, see story in Sunday's edition of The News Courier.
