Seeing yellow

Despite recent rain, pollen count remains high

— While parts of the Midwest are blanketed in snow, the Tennessee Valley is waking up to blankets of pollen.

The fine yellow powder clings to every surface imaginable and floats in the air straight into the sinus cavities of the unsuspecting, causing itchy throats, watery eyes and nonstop sneezing.

“You definitely have seen some of the highest counts this year, and that’s with all the rain we’ve been having,” said Debra Hopson, a biologist with the city of Huntsville.

Hopson works in the Natural Resources and Environmental Management Department as a monitor of ambient air conditions.
