Piney Chapel woman offering garden tours Saturday

— Most people who live in Piney Chapel know of Gladys Wilson and her flowers. In fact, people have come from miles around to take a tour of her gardens, converse and purchase a plant or two.

From irises and peonies to roses, clematis, lilies and more, her home is currently in bloom bursting with flowers of every color.

“I have flowers everywhere,” she said. “It makes me happy.”

Those who would like to tour Wilson’s gardens are always welcome. She is hosting Wilson’s Flower Tour from 3-5 p.m. Saturday at her home at 21195 Bean Road.

Wilson, 83, is a widow, She started her gardens at age 70.

“I said to myself ‘now what can a fat lady do,’” she said with a grin, adding she knew she needed some sunshine and to get out in nature. “At 70, I started a flower garden with the help of five other flower friends. “

She wants folks of all ages, especially older adults, to come out and enjoy the day.

“Every new person that comes in my yard gets a flower,” Wilson said. “I believe if you are looking out for other people and sharing with other people, you are just happy.”

Wilson, who admits her life hasn’t always been easy, believes there’s no need to dwell in the past. She takes each day as it comes, relies on her faith and tries to keep a happy outlook.

Her flowers give her the opportunity to share those same life lessons with others.

“Bring your lawn chair and camera and take a tour,” Wilson said.

Donations will be accepted for a mission project.
