Malnourished horses being cared for by Sheriff's Office

— Two horses found by Limestone County Sheriff’s deputies in a Ham Road pasture Tuesday are receiving much-needed care.

When deputies responded to a call of a dead horse in the pasture, they found a mare and colt, both emaciated with ribs and hipbones showing.

“They were both in bad shape and one was in terrible shape,” Sheriff Mike Blakely said.

According to published media reports, Emma Hardman, the landlord where the horses were located, said she has been unable to contact the man who owns the two animals.

“We are still trying to locate the owner of the horse,” the sheriff said late Thursday. “The person who leased the land may be in Mexico, and one of his relatives claimed he had already sold the horses to someone else.”

The mare and colt are at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena, where they will be kept warm and fed until someone can take care of them.

“We’ve had quite few offers to take care of them until the disposition of this case,” the sheriff said.

When the owner is found, he will be charged with cruelty to animals, Blakely said.
