Sidewalk laid at Farmers Market

— Laying concrete is typically considered hard work, especially during Alabama’s sweltering July temperatures. On Thursday, however, Mother Nature dealt a city of Athens Public Works crew some cooler temperatures to pour and smooth fresh laid concrete on a new sidewalk in front of Limestone County Farmers Market.

The new walkway is part of a project made possible through a $20,000 grant from Lowe’s. It’s spearheaded by Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful, and includes the installment of community gardens, an irrigation system and green space.

Construction includes on-street customer parking and loading space for Farmers Market vendors.

The sidewalks will connect the market to the existing sidewalk on Houston Street, the Coleman Hill neighborhood across the Brownsferry Street bridge and to the large public parking lot on the east side of Madison Street. The intent is to allow market access from multiple directions.

Residents who want to know more about the community gardens can contact Lynne Hart, executive coordinator of KALB, at or 256-233-8728.
