Julian Newman leadership program focuses on '7 habits'

By Rebecca Croomes

— Julian Newman Elementary School students, teachers and staff were decked out in black and gold Thursday as guests came to learn a thing or two, or seven, about leadership.

The second annual Leadership Day program involved the kids showing off their knowledge of Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” — a method of developing skills to communicate with others in a work environment.

Schools across Athens have adopted the “Leader in Me” program, which is an adaptation of Covey’s book meant to teach children classroom behaviors. To become a “Leader” school, faculty and staff are extensively trained to learn the habits and pass them down.

Along the halls of Julian Newman Thursday, student assembly leaders paired up at display tables to present one of the seven habits and how it applies to their daily routines.
