Women's Build helping create homes for families in need

— Mothers help make a house a home and Habitat for Humanity wants moms to volunteer to be a part of that process for other families in need.

On consecutive Saturdays, May 4, and 11, from 8 a.m. to noon, Habitat of Athens/Limestone County will host a Women’s Build event at two local sites. The labor is not construction-intensive, said Amanda Garlen of Limestone Habitat, but will involve painting, landscaping and general cleaning. No prior experience is required.

The event always takes place the week before or after Mother’s Day, and this year the theme is a mother-daughter build.

“It’s more to challenge women,” Garlen said. “Hopefully it’ll open the eyes of the community toward what’s going on.”

Women’s Build Week is a national Habitat for Humanity campaign designed to garner more female volunteers, but the gender gap isn’t a problem in Limestone County.

“Here in Athens we’re very blessed to have a lot of women volunteers,” Garlen said.

Though the title implies no boys allowed, Garlen said volunteers of either gender are more than welcome to participate.

Lowe’s is underwriting Women’s Build, donating money to Habitat for Humanity organizations nationwide to purchase tools and building materials.

No registration is required for Women’s Build, but Garlen said registration is preferred to keep track of numbers. Participants can contact Garlen at amanda@habitatalc.org, or 256-230-6001.

All equipment will be provided.

Aside from grants and donations, Garlen is coordinating a bass fishing tournament, scheduled for June 8 at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur. She said she’s already had a few anglers sign up, but is still accepting registrations. The tournament is also in need of sponsors.

“We’ve never had an annual event, so we’re hoping this takes off and we’re able to do it for many, many years to come,” Garlen said.

All money raised from the tournament will go directly to Habitat for Humanity of Athens/Limestone County for future builds.
