Amateur radio operators, weather enthusiasts and the just plain curious wandered into the Athens Event Center Monday night for a crash course in sky watching.
The National Weather Service in Huntsville and Limestone County EMA hosted the storm spotter certification course, teaching participants what to look for when the clouds roll in.
Huntsville NWS meteorologist Tim Troutman began the presentation by advising the audience that what they were learning to do isn’t storm chasing, but instead called “point spotting,” where the spotter reports what’s going on in one place. Safety is the top priority, Troutman said.
