An abused dog thrown from a camper in Alabama is now living the high life in a country home in upstate New York.
Long and lucky has been the journey of Dakota the mixed breed dog from Limestone County.
Dakota was found in July last year with a broken right, rear leg and taken to the Athens-Limestone Animal Shelter. Limestone County Sheriff’s investigators said the owner became angry at the dog and threw it onto the ground from his camper, breaking the dog’s leg. He was charged with animal cruelty. Dakota got the first of a series of lucky breaks from veterinarian Robert Pitman. The vet performed surgery on the dog’s hip and leg but, eventually, the limb had to be amputated. Dakota healed well in his foster home and was ready for adoption.
