Sweet sounds of New 'Awlins heard at Saturday Market

— New Orleans style-jazz of the Coolboone Brass Band produced a lot of toe-tapping and smiles at Saturday Market in the Farmers Market pavilion.

The corner of South Houston and Green streets Saturday was a place to forget the gloomy weather and have your spirits lifted.

As people shopped for tomatoes, corn, beans, fruits and other items, the band inspired impromptu dancing and even led a pet and children’s parade up a section of Houston Street.

Steve “Coolbone” Johnson grew up in New Orleans and played with several brass bands until Hurricane Katrina disbursed players throughout the country. Johnson settled in North Alabama and put together the band that played at Saturday Market.

The market is open from 8 a.m. until noon Saturdays. More on planned weekly programs is available at http://www.athenssaturdaymarket.com.
