James Howard Bain, 77, was born April 15, 1931 and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Jan. 31, 2009 at his home in Gardendale with his family by his side.

He was born in Athens and graduated from Ardmore High School. Howard was a resident of Gardendale since 1949 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from Roadway Express with 32 years of service. He was a member of Gardendale’s First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffrey; mother, Avo Bain; father, Cornelius Bain; brother, John Walton Bain; and sister, Carrie Wallace.

Howard was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jewel Dean; two daughters and a son, Glenda Peak and husband Jim of Minnesota, Sandra Bain Moon and husband Steve of Hoover, James H. Bain Jr. and wife Gina of Fultondale; four grandchildren, Lindsay and Logan Peak, Trevor and Taylor Bain; nephews, Dennis Bain and wife Terri, Danny Bain and wife Liz, all of Decatur, Grady Bain and wife Julie of Athens, Jerry Wallace and wife Leone of Michigan; niece, Jo Ann Klos and husband Skip of Michigan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the chapel of Gardendale Funeral Home with the Rev. Leon Zalenski officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
