Martha Ann Malone Pope passed away Monday, March 24, 2008, after a brief illness. She was born July 13, 1918. After graduating from Athens High School, Mrs. Pope moved to Montgomery where she worked as a secretary to the Chief of the Budget Division of the State Finance Department. She married Albert Russell Pope of Ridley Park, Pa., in 1944. She returned to Athens in 1953 and worked for 20 years for the Farmers Home Administration, retiring in 1973. She was preceded in death by her mother, Daisy Warten Malone; father, W.W. Malone and brother, W.W. “Billy” Malone Jr.

Mrs. Pope is survived by her only child, Barry “Chipper” Malone Pope and his wife, Sue, of New Jersey. She has two granddaughters, Tara Lee Perez, and husband Gabe of Fort Worth, Texas, and Ruth Ann Pope of Houston, Texas, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. W.W. “Mitzi” Malone Jr. Mrs. Pope has two nephews, William and Pat Malone, and a niece, Lane Tutt. She also has a special caregiver, Rossie Noble of Athens.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Athens Police Library, Athens State University Library, or the First United Methodist Church Library.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Athens City Cemetery, with the Rev. James Bassham officiating. McConnell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
