Bank robbery

Photos from a surveillance camera at Regions Bank were released Wednesday by Athens Police in hopes someone can identify the suspect in the Nov. 22 bank robbery.

“We’re trying to get the guy identified,” said Capt. Marty Bruce. “We have a suspect. If anybody knows the guy or they recognize anything about him, they should give us a call.”

Police investigators can be reached at 233-8700.

A man named last week as a “person of interest” has not been located, Bruce said, nor has a car described as the one used by the suspect.

Bruce said the photos have been released after two weeks because the Federal Bureau of Investigation used high-tech equipment to enhance the grainy images.

The robber, who entered the bank at about 2 p.m. and demanded money from a teller, was described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s.

He wielded a pistol but no one was injured. The amount of cash taken has not been released.

Witnesses said the man, who appeared to be alone, drove away in a late 1980s or early 1990s light green Pontiac Grand Prix. The car had a Jackson County tag.
