A Southern Family Markets spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday that the Piggly Wiggly supermarket in the Athens Towne Center is closing.

Spokeswoman Angela Comfort said the store, which opened for business at that location in October 2007, would close completely by the end of September.

She said the store at U.S. 31 and Hobbs Street would remain open, however.

“The pharmacy script (prescription) records will be automatically moved to the U.S. 31 location,” she said. “We look forward to serving our customers’ pharmacy needs there as well as their food needs.”

The first Piggly Wiggly opened Sept. 6, 1916, at 79 Jefferson Street in Memphis. Operating under the unusual name Piggly Wiggly, it was unlike any other grocery store of that time with shopping baskets, open shelves and no clerks to shop for the customer.

There are more than 600 Piggly Wiggly stores in 17 states. All Piggly Wiggly stores are independently owned and operated, and are located primarily throughout the Southeast and as far north as Wisconsin.

Piggly Wiggly LLC, the corporate headquarters, is located in Keene, N.H., and issues Piggly Wiggly franchises to qualified independent grocery retailers, according to the company’s Web site.
