An Athens man remains behind bars and two others are sought by authorities after an armed robbery left a man naked and begging for help from neighbors, an official said.
Limestone County Sheriff's Spokesman Stephen Young said the victim gave a woman a ride Feb. 8 to her previous residence so she could pick up a few things. Nicholas Ferguson and Lachriston Mayberry met the victim at the residence, removed him from the vehicle and held him at gunpoint with a pink sawed-off shotgun while ordering him to remove his clothes, according to Young.
"The victim was robbed of his clothes, cash and his vehicle," Young said. "The suspects threatened to sodomize the victim with a baseball bat, but when Mayberry was distracted while looking for the bat, the victim fled on foot."
Young said the suspects fired at him while he was running but missed. The victim was able to get help from a neighbor, who called LCSO. Investigators obtained warrants for Mayberry and Ferguson related to the robbery, but additional warrants were obtained after Mayberry drove a stolen vehicle to a residence on County Line Road, tried to break in and shot into the residence before leaving.
Investigators also obtained warrants for Alexia Devaney regarding the vehicle Mayberry drove to County Line Road.
Young said Mayberry was spotted Friday near the Athens Walmart and arrested with help from the U.S. Marshals Service and the special reaction team. Mayberry, 25, is charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree theft, first-degree receiving stolen property, shooting into an occupied dwelling and using a false identity to obstruct justice. He remains in the Limestone County Jail with bail set at $42,500.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Ferguson or Devaney is asked to call 256-232-0111 and speak with Investigator Caleb Durden. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
